Immigration has complicated the conditions for obtaining a green card for some categories
The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will gradually schedule face-to-face interviews for those categories of immigrants who previously had benefits and could apply for a permanent residence permit in the United States without additional meetings and interviews.
This step was taken by the immigration service after signing the 13780 decree “Protecting the nation from foreign terrorist penetration into the United States” and is part of comprehensive measures to further detect and prevent fraud, and strengthen the integrity of the immigration system.
Starting in October, USCIS will begin to schedule interviews for the following purposes:
- Adjustment of employment status claims based on employment (I-485 form, green card application).
- Refugee relative's petition (form I-730, refugee family reunion) for beneficiaries (residents receiving benefits) who are in the United States, and apply for accession to the main refugee applicant.
Previously, applicants in these categories did not need to be interviewed by USCIS staff for their application for permanent residence to be considered. In addition to these categories, USCIS plans to gradually expand interviews with other categories of migrants.
“These changes reflect the Administration’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening the integrity of our nation’s immigration system,” said USCIS Acting Director James W. McCament. “USCIS and our federal partners are developing more robust vetting procedures for individuals seeking immigration benefits to reside in the United States.”
Conducting personal interviews will provide USCIS officers with the opportunity to verify the information provided in the individual’s application, learn new information that may be relevant to the legal process, and determine the level of confidence in a person seeking permanent residence in the United States.
In addition, individuals may report immigration fraud or abuse by completing the ICE HSI form.
