Needles in strawberries, bananas and apples: scandal in Australian shops
Police in the Australian state of New South Wales confirmed that sewing needles were found in apples and bananas.
Authorities responded to messages from two fruit buyers, one of whom found a needle in an apple, and the other in a banana, writes Rtvi.
Authorities are investigating incidents, and the police recalled the maximum sentence of ten years in prison that threatened such crimes.
Australians stopped buying strawberries in stores after they found sewing needles in some berries. Dangerous berries were lying on counters in Western Australia, Tasmania, Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales. At least one person went to the hospital because he swallowed a needle.
They were in the products of seven companies that pack strawberries in plastic containers, writes Rtvi.
The Strawberry Producers Association of Australia said that the consequences of the crime threaten the entire industry. Berries in stores fell due to lack of demand.
Manufacturers began to install metal detectors and inspect all products before they hit the store shelves.
Police believe that crimes with needles in bananas and apples are not related to strawberry incidents, law enforcement officials suspect that the offender may have a copycat.
The police have no suspects yet. Queensland authorities promised pay 100 thousands of Australian dollars ($ 72 thousands) for information that will help catch those responsible.
After reports of needles in apples and bananas, Australians are advised to cut all the fruits before a meal and examine them very carefully.
The country's health minister, Greg Hunt, said that the agency, along with the police, would inspect all farms where strawberries are grown, as well as the entire supply chain from farm to supermarket.
The first message about a sewing needle in strawberries appeared 9 September. A person who swallowed a half of a needle and complained to doctors about a sharp pain in the abdomen turned to the hospital.
