Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and General Motors recall thousands of cars: malfunctions can lead to injuries, accidents and fires

The latest vehicle recall, released last week by the US National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), includes 807 vehicles from Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and General Motors. The recall aims to fix everything from faulty windshield wipers to short circuits that could start a fire. USAToday.

About 1% of recalled vehicles are defective, according to the report. Affected owners will receive instructions in the mail on May 16 to take their car to a Hyundai dealer for a free wiper arm replacement, the report said.

Kia and Hyundai issue a parking warning

According to NHTSA reports, Kia and Hyundai have asked owners of 571 SUVs and vans to park away from buildings because cars are prone to short circuits.

Korean automakers said the recalled vehicles may be equipped with a defective towbar assembly that could get water in and cause a short circuit. Reports say that this may increase the risk of fire.

A total of 567 Hyundai vehicles and 912 Kia vehicles were affected. On May 3, owners will be sent instructions on how to take their car to an authorized Kia or Hyundai dealer for a free repair. Hyundai stated that there was one report of a fire related to this issue.

Mercedes-Benz cars can catch fire

According to NHTSA report, Mercedes-Benz recalls 61 of their SUVs because water can seep into electrical components and cause a short circuit that can start a fire.

The automaker said the air conditioning drain hose may be leaking due to a "deviation in the assembly process".

“Water entering the footwells can cause corrosion and/or short-circuiting of electrical components, increasing the risk of fire,” Mercedes-Benz said in a report. — Additionally, the emergency call (eCall) function may be disabled and doors may not open, increasing the risk of injury. In addition, the engine may not start or go into limp mode, increasing the risk of an accident.”

According to the report, drivers may notice wet carpets in the footwells or misted windows in the event of a leak.

• 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 63 (54 vehicles).
• 2020-2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 (16,949 vehicles).
• 2020-2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS 580 (1,741 vehicles).
• 2021 Mercedes-Benz Maybach GLS 600 (3 cars).
• 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS 63 (29 cars).

The report says there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the problem. Mercedes-Benz will offer affected owners a free A/C drain hose repair at the dealership in notification letters on May 16.

Cadillac, GMC, Chevrolet and more recalled due to faulty transmission

General Motors said in a report on recall NHTSA that 7840 vehicles of multiple makes and models may have transmissions manufactured using incorrect parts.

“The transmission may have been manufactured with the wrong gear, which could cause the driver's side axle shaft to become disconnected from the transmission,” the report states. “This could cause the driver's side axle shaft to disengage from the transmission, resulting in loss of traction.”

The report states that the loss of traction or mechanical parking can increase the risk of a crash and rollback. Drivers may hear clicking or grinding noises from the front of the vehicle if the problem is present.

• 2023 Cadillac XT6 (613 cars).
• 2023 GMC Acadia (1,059 vehicles).
• 2022-2023 Cadillac XT5 (783 cars).
• 2023 Chevrolet Blazer (444 cars).
• 2023 Chevrolet Traverse (4,941 cars).

GM said it received 164 complaints potentially related to the problem, but none of them resulted in an accident or injury. According to the recall report, owners will receive guidance on May 1 on how to replace the part free of charge.
