In New York, legalized the issuance of a driver's license to illegal immigrants

Shortly after the controversial bill granting driving licenses to illegal immigrants was supported by the New York State Senate, it was signed by State Governor Andrew Cuomo.

On June 17, Cuomo signed the bill, despite the fact that at the last moment he stumped his supporters - the governor asked State Attorney Barbara Underwood to assess all the risks and threatened to veto the project if he did not like her assessment, he writes. New York Post.

“You could create a database for federal officials to use to actually track undocumented individuals,” Cuomo said on WAMC Radio. “California passed a similar law, and now they are in a legal battle.”

But the head of Barbara Underwood, Attorney General of New York, Laetitia James, later stated that the bill was legally justified.

“The bill is carefully crafted and provides sufficient protection for those applying for a driver's license. If this bill is passed and challenged in court, we will vigorously defend it,” she said.

180 days are required for the law to enter into force: this means that the first driver’s license will be issued to illegal immigrants in December.

• In addition to protecting illegal immigrants from being arrested and deported, lawmakers and lawyers in New York say that their bill, the Law on Access to Driving Permits and Confidentiality, will improve public safety and contribute to state income.
• At the same time, the Association of State Employees protested — the organization does not agree with illegal immigrants in New York being issued driver's licenses.
