US Department of State: Ukraine may become a rogue state
“If this path (the production of a nuclear bomb) continues, Ukraine will face the status of a rogue country - like North Korea or Iran. Does Ukraine want to be in such company?” - Gottmuller noted. According to her, the restoration of nuclear potential will lead to the country “losing its leading role in the world on the issue of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, as well as its status as a reliable partner.”
In addition, Gottmuller is convinced that Kyiv “will not receive the minimum added value to its security.” “It’s exactly the opposite. The consequences of such changes for Ukraine will be simply catastrophic,” the deputy head of the State Department emphasized.
In November of this year, the Ukrainian authorities recognized the impossibility of returning the country to the status of a nuclear power. “At one time, Ukraine took a rather serious step, abandoning one of the world’s largest nuclear arsenals, and it was the right step from both a political and practical-technical point of view,” said Yevgeny Perebiynis, head of the information policy department of the country’s Foreign Ministry.
According to him, after the collapse of the USSR, Kiev had no opportunity to maintain the nuclear potential it inherited.
In September, the theme of the possible use of nuclear weapons was raised by the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Valery Geletei. He argued that the relevant threats to Ukraine allegedly came from Russia. The head of the military department also allowed for the resumption of the nuclear status of Ukraine itself.
The idea of restoring the nuclear status is also supported by deputies from the nationalist Svoboda party. Moreover, this point is contained in the party program. Ukrainian nationalists believe that this will protect the country from “Russian aggression.”
