Google, Twitter and Facebook accused of aiding the IG

Relatives of the victims of the June terrorist attack at the Florida Pulse nightclub in the American city of Orlando (Florida) filed a lawsuit against Facebook, Twitter and Google. Relatives of the victims believe that social networks belonging to these corporations provided “material support” to the terrorist group “Islamic State”, and also contributed to the “radicalization” of Omar Mateen, the shooter who opened fire on club visitors, reports TASS.

As the relatives of the three victims—Tavin Crosby, Javier Jorge-Reyes, and Juan Ramon Guerrero—said in the lawsuit, the social services “provided the IS terrorist group with accounts that it used to spread extremist propaganda, raise funds, and attract new recruits.”

“If it were not for defendants Facebook, Twitter and Google, the rapid emergence of ISIS over the past few years into one of the most feared terrorist groups in the world would not have been possible,” the applicants are convinced. They would like social networks to establish additional restrictions in their work that would put a barrier to the spread of information with extremist content.

The broadcaster notes that IG militants are actively using Facebook and Twitter and are uploading promotional videos to Google’s YouTube service. Comments from representatives of social networks in connection with the lawsuit has not yet been received.

According to the US Communications Decency Act of 1996, “no provider or user of an interactive computing system shall be deemed to be the publisher or disseminator of any information provided by another information resource provider.” According to some experts, this wording actually means that such web services are not responsible for what users publish.

In June, a massacre occurred in Orlando, which is considered the bloodiest in modern US history. 29, an Afghan-born American, Omar Matin, who swore allegiance to the IG and her leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, entered the club Florida Pulse, who attended gay men, and opened fire with a rifle and pistol at visitors. As a result of the attack, 49 people died, 53 injured. The police eliminated the terrorist at the crime scene.
