A secret project codenamed "Minkowski" at Google will be unveiled to the public as a new offshoot called Aalyria.

Aalyria said in a press release that its mission is to operate "ultra-fast, ultra-secure and highly efficient, complex communications networks that span land, sea, air, near space and deep space."

The company says it has laser communication technology "on an exponentially greater scale and speed than anything that exists today." The Aalyria software platform has been used in several aerospace networking projects for Google.

The Aalyria spin-off comes as Google's parent company Alphabet sees ad spending on the decline and is trying to promote or wind down experimental projects. In part, that means seeking outside funding for some of the projects she's been nurturing for years. Ventures such as life sciences company Verily and self-driving car maker Waymo raised money from outside investors, while Alphabet shut down initiatives such as kite-building Makani and an internet-radiation balloon business. loon.

Aalyria said it has an $8,7 million commercial contract with the US Defense Innovation Division. The company will be led by CEO Chris Taylor, a national security expert who has led other companies that have worked with the government. Taylor's LinkedIn profile states that he is the CEO of the company he founded in November.

Alphabet itself has been pursuing more lucrative government contracts and earlier this year announced the formation of "Google Public Sector," a new subsidiary focused on partnerships with the US government, primarily through Google Cloud.

Aalyria's advisory board includes several former Google employees and executives, as well as Vint Cerf, known as one of the fathers of the Internet.

Google will retain a minority stake (the size of the stake does not allow it to directly participate in the management of the company) of Allyria, but declined to say how much it owns and how much the company has attracted external financing. Google said earlier this year it transferred nearly a decade of intellectual property, patents and physical assets to Allyria, including office space.

Aalyria's light laser technology, which she calls "Tightbeam", keeps data "intact in the atmosphere and in all weather and enables communication where there is no supporting infrastructure."

"Tightbeam radically improves satellite connectivity, Wi-Fi on planes and ships, and cellular connectivity everywhere," the company said in a statement.
