To be considered as a contender for an apartment in municipal buildings, you need to submit an application on the website apply.nycha.info. NYC Housing Connect (nyc.gov/housingconnect) is a portal for finding affordable housing in the city of New York and applying for it. On the site you can:

• View current and upcoming housing opportunities.
• Make and save a request for your household.
• Apply for housing options for which you can apply.

Applying for affordable housing and checking program compliance can take a long time, and no one can guarantee you the provision of housing. When applying for affordable housing as part of the eligibility check procedure, your credit history and personal data can be checked.

To do this, you must have a Social Security Number (SSN) or tax identification number (Individual Tax Identification Number, ITIN). Your family must meet all the criteria for a residential property. In this case, your application will participate in the process of random selection.

• help prevent evictions;

• assistance in obtaining social benefits;

• financial advice and development of money handling skills;

• help with relocation;

• intermediary services between the landlord and tenants;

• job placement / referral services;

• assistance in finding public resources;

• short-term financial assistance.

RIGHT TO RESOLVE HOUSING ISSUES

The New York City Human Rights Law prohibits a landlord:

• refuse to rent housing because of a person’s immigration status, nationality or religious beliefs;

• place ads with restrictions for tenants, for example, for immigrants or people from certain countries;

• refuse to carry out appropriate repairs or provide appropriate services for tenants because of their immigration status, nationality or religious beliefs;

• based on the immigration status, nationality or religious beliefs of tenants, to force them to release apartments.
