According to the mayor, the tax will add about $ 230 million per year to pay pensions to employees in full. This plan raises the water and sewage tax for the average family to $ 53 per year in 2017; up to $ 115 in 2018; up to $ 180 for 2019 and $ 225 for 2020.

Emanuel also rejected other possible tax increases:

“We have the highest sales tax in the United States,” he said.

According to the mayor, a tax on water supply and sewage will be the most fair.

Critics are confident that the mayor’s plan will have a significant multiplier effect, especially for businesses such as laundries, which depend heavily on water. That, in turn, will entail a rise in prices for services, and ultimately will affect people who use the services of laundries due to the lack of washing machines at home.

The question of raising taxes on water and sewage arose a year after the mayor and council members approved a record $ 588 million property tax to help the pension fund, the police and firefighters. Therefore, many homeowners are full of promotions.
