FDA recalls large batch of dog food: 28 animals died

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is recalling pet food. At least 28 dogs have died and 8 others have become ill. Writes about it Fox8.

Recalled feed consignments contain “potentially lethal levels of aflatoxin”. It is a toxin produced by molds in corn and other grains.

Symptoms in pets include:

• tardiness
• loss of appetite
• vomiting
• jaundice (yellowish tinge of the eyes or gums due to liver damage)
• diarrhea.

In some cases, pets may suffer from liver damage but show no symptoms.

The FDA warning says the number of cases and the volume of recalls may increase.

According to the FDA, pet owners should stop feeding their pets with this product and consult a veterinarian, especially if the pet shows signs of illness.

“While the food recall is still ongoing, we are sharing the facts we have because the levels of aflatoxin found in the recalled pet food are potentially lethal. We are working quickly on this evolving situation and will continue to update the public as new information becomes available,” Amber McCoig, deputy director of compliance for the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), said in a statement.

List of dry pet foods that Midwestern Pet Food should recall:

• Sportmix Energy Plus, 50lb (22 кг) (03/02/22/05/L2; 03/02/22/05/L3; 03/03/22/05/L2)
• Sportmix Energy Plus, 44lb (20 кг) (03/02/22/05/L3)
• Sportmix Premium High Energy, 50lb (22 кг) (03/03/22/05/L3)
• Sportmix Premium High Energy, 44lb (20 kg) bag (03/03/22/05 / L3)
• Sportmix Original Cat, 31lb (14 кг) (03/03/22/05/L3)
• Sportmix Original Cat, 15lb (7 кг) (03/03/22/05/L2; 03/03/22/05/L3)

The FDA said the recalled feed was distributed to online retailers and stores across the country.

There is no evidence that pet owners who handle aflatoxin-containing products are at risk of aflatoxin poisoning. However, pet owners should always wash their hands after handling pet food.
