Jewish roots, political connections and secrets of success: the Israeli press about Zelensky
Showman Vladimir Zelensky attracted attention abroad, first with his high ratings, and later with his leadership in the first round of presidential elections. The Israeli press is no exception. The journalists in Israel, besides the reasons for Zelensky’s success, are also interested in his Jewish origin.
The edition of The Times of Israel on the eve of the elections tried to find out whether Vladimir Zelensky was a Jew, says Crimea.Real. At the request of the publication, the head of the United Jewish Community of Ukraine, Michael Tkach, replied that the showman’s mother was Jewish, but Zelensky himself was not a practicing Jew and was married to a woman who was not Jewish.
A representative of the Odessa Jewish community "Chabad" Boleslav Kapulkin told the publication that he had the impression that Zelensky had adopted Christianity.
“I don’t know for sure whether he accepted Christianity, but I heard that he said that he is the godfather of the children of his friends, or that they are the godparents of his children, something like that,” he quotes the edition of Kapulkin.
But despite the fact whether Zelensky converted to Christianity or not, the representative of the Association of Jewish Organizations and Communities, Vyacheslav Likhachev, said the publication that the sponsor of the Zelensky campaign was Jewish oligarch Igor Kolomoisky.

Zelensky himself refused to comment on the publication of its origin, the article says. His advisor, Dmitry Razumkov, said that the ethnicity of the candidates does not matter in Ukraine - it is a tolerant state, where everyone is treated equally.
Immediately after the first round of elections, The Jerusalem Post edition congratulated Zelensky in his Twitter note: “This is not an April Fool's joke! Congratulations to the Jewish comedian Vladimir Zelensky, who became the leader of the first round of voting in the presidential elections in Ukraine. "
“Zelensky, 41, dubbed by local media as the “Ukrainian Donald Trump,” plays a history teacher turned president in his popular TV show “Servant of the People,” the article says.
“The powerful output of 41-year-old Zelensky reflects people's desire for a new leader who has no links with the corrupt political elite of Ukraine and can offer a new approach to resolving the five-year conflict with Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine,” the Israeli newspaper Haaretz said. .

Born in Krivoy Rog in a Jewish family of scientists, Zelensky did not recall his Jewish identity in an interview before or during the campaign, which critics call fuzzy, the author notes.
“Although supporters see a real breath of fresh air in Zelensky, critics say that its manifesto is unclear and the belligerent country should not give a chance to a political newcomer,” says The Times of Israel, another post-election article.
The actor, who has already been compared with former US President Ronald Reagan, prefers video commentary on social networks rather than press interviews, the authors write.
And although the actor is told that he is the “puppet” of the oligarch Igor Kolomoisky, he denies this political connection.
“Kolomoisky, one of the richest and most controversial personalities of Ukraine, became the regional governor at the beginning of Poroshenko’s presidency, but was forced to resign after disagreements over the state oil company. He now lives in Israel, ”the publication reminds.
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko during the campaign repeatedly mentioned that Kolomoisky was trying to influence the voting from abroad.
"It is believed that Zelensky is a Jew, although the leaders of the Jewish community in the country are divided on this issue, and he refused to comment on his religious identity during the campaign," the article says.

Israeli television channel i24 News also published material about the success of the Ukrainian actor in the first round of elections.
"If Zelensky wins in the second round in April, as polls predict, the actor will take the wheel of one of the poorest countries in Europe - a nation with 45 millions of people fighting with pro-Russian separatists in the industrial east of the state", the article says.
Despite concerns about his uncertain political platform, supporters insist that only “a new person can clear the dark politics” of Ukraine. And with the use of social networks, Zelensky was able to attract young voters to himself, according to an Israeli television channel.
