CNN: US recalled spy from Russia after Lavrov’s visit to the White House

In a previously unknown secret mission in 2017, the United States recalled a spy from Russia in order to avoid being exposed, said CNN sources in the Trump administration.

The seizure came at a time of great concern in the intelligence community over the misuse of intelligence by Trump and his administration. These issues were described by CNN by five sources who served in the Trump administration, intelligence agencies, and Congress.

This decision was made shortly after Trump's May 2017 meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and then-Russian Ambassador to the United States Sergei Kislyak. During this meeting, they discussed classified information regarding the Islamic State in Syria provided by Israel. Trump had no right to disclose this secret data to representatives of a foreign state.

A few weeks after the decision to seize the spy, in July 2017, Trump met privately with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit in Hamburg and took an unusual step — confiscated the translator’s records. After that, intelligence officials reiterated their concern that the president may have again revealed to the Russian president secret information obtained by US intelligence.

The then CIA director Mike Pompeo told other senior Trump administration officials that there was too much information about the U.S. secret agent in Russia. Therefore, it was decided to extract it, to which US intelligence resorts if it assumes that the agent is in immediate danger.

The secret removal of a high-level agent from Russia left the United States without one of its key sources of information about the Kremlin’s internal work, plans and views of the Russian president at a time when tensions between the two countries were growing. The US intelligence community considers Russia one of the two greatest threats to US national security, along with China.

The decision to pull the spy out of Russia was the culmination of months of growing fear in the intelligence community. According to a former senior intelligence official, at the end of the Obama administration’s period, US intelligence officials have already expressed concern about the security of this spy and other Russian CIA assets.

These fears intensified at the start of the 2017 year after the U.S. intelligence community published its public report on Russia's interference in the 2016 election, which stated that Putin himself had ordered the operation.

The intelligence community also shared a secret version of the report with the new Trump administration, the document included secret information about intelligence sources.

When asked about the comments, Brittany Bramell, CIA director of public relations, told CNN:

“CNN’s narrative that the Central Intelligence Agency makes decisions about life or death based on anything other than objective analysis and collection of information is simply false. The assumption that the president’s appeal with intelligence of our country, to which he has access every day, led to the fact that the alleged exfiltration operation took place, is inaccurate. "

White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said: "CNN reports are not only incorrect, but can also endanger life."

Details of the return of the spy and his identity were not disclosed.
