US President Joe Biden met with former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. She shared her impressions after meeting with the publication "Present".

“We spent little time together, about 15 minutes, but it was a very warm meeting. I saw a person who cares about what is happening in Belarus. And I conveyed to Mr. President our messages that in Belarus the struggle is not geopolitical - this is our struggle against violence, against lawlessness. I am leaving the White House with confidence that the United States will be with the Belarusians – both now and later,” Tikhanovskaya noted.

“It was an honor for me to meet Tikhanovskaya at the White House. The United States stands with the people of Belarus in their pursuit of democracy and human rights,” Biden wrote about the meeting.

The former presidential candidate arrived in the United States at the official invitation of the State Department. The leader of the Belarusian opposition has already held talks with high-ranking representatives of the US administration, congressmen and senators. And on July 19, she met with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, his deputy Victoria Nuland and US State Department adviser Derek Scholl.

They discussed the hijacking of a Ryanair plane, attacks on civil society and the media, and illegal immigration to Lithuania organized by the regime of Alexander Lukashenko.

Tikhanovskaya called on the United States to accept an aid package for Belarusian media and investigative journalist. And also to increase political and economic pressure on Lukashenka and his regime. Tikhanovskaya asked to stop contracts with the regime and impose sanctions, as well as synchronize actions with the EU, Great Britain and Canada.

She also believes that the United States should act as a mediator in possible negotiations between the authorities in Minsk and the opposition. She also calls on Washington to support civil society in Belarus, which is being repressed by Lukashenka.

“I want all countries of the world to pay attention to Belarus, although I understand that there are many different problems in the world. But we are fighting for values ​​that are common to the whole world. And I want the United States to be leaders in this fight,” Tikhanovskaya noted.

She called on the United States and other countries to increase pressure on official Minsk in order to get him to release political prisoners.
