'The Devil Next Door': Netflix will show a series about a Ukrainian who committed terrible crimes against Jews

The streaming platform Netflix will show the documentary series “The Devil Next Door.” This is the story of an ordinary American citizen, Ivan Demjanjuk, originally from Ukraine, who hid his dark past from everyone. Writes about this Buro.

To his family and friends, he was an ordinary retired auto mechanic until he was accused in the 1970s of collaborating with the SS and working in the Treblinka and Sobibor extermination camps during the Holocaust.

Then he was an 20-year-old warden, who controlled cars that supplied gas to the cells, and showed particular cruelty to prisoners. He cut off the ears of his victims when they worked, beat them before sending them to death, writes Gloss.UA.

The documentary series attempts to shed light on the case of Demjanjuk, who was known as a brutal torturer and was called the devil and "Ivan the Terrible." His trial took place in Israel. And although he himself declared his innocence, there was enough evidence to the contrary.

“My heart is pure,” said Demyaniuk in the courtroom.

In 1988, Demjanjuk was sentenced to death, but a couple of years later the sentence was canceled due to lack of evidence. In 2001, Demjanjuk returned to the United States, where he again went on trial. Then there was Spain, and in the end, Germany, where they confirmed the authenticity of documents indicating that Demyanjuk worked in the SS, writes STMEGI.

Sentence handed down by a Munich court shortly before Demjanjuk’s death in 2012 in a nursing home in the German town of Bad Feilnbach, 5 years of imprisonment, did not have time to put into effect. He became the last in the biography of Demjanjuk, but not the first.

Demyanjuk was accused of the brutal murder of almost 28 thousand Jews.

The documentary series is released on Netflix 4 on November.
