Prehistoric delicacy: scientists have created a meatball of mammoth meat
An incredible exhibit has appeared at the Amsterdam Science Museum - meatball made from mammoth meat. Writes about this with the BBC.
Scientists have managed to create artificial flesh using woolly mammoth and elephant DNA. The project, in collaboration with Australian scientists, was carried out by the artificial meat company Vow.
The main goal of the project is to show the potential of the technology of growing meat from cells.
Traditional animal husbandry is one of the factors of climate change on Earth, the company believes. In addition, for such meat it is not necessary to kill animals.

Vow works with cages of rare and exotic species such as alpacas, bison, kangaroos or peacocks. By experimenting with them, the company is trying to create new types of meat.
How this technology works
Animals have so-called stem cells that form various tissues, such as nerves or skin.
Scientists can take these cells and multiply them in a petri dish, a laboratory vessel.
From one tiny muscle cell, you can grow tens of millions of others. Together they form muscle fibers.
And if you make a lot of such fibers, then you get "meat".
This particular meatball is made from a mixture of mammoth myoglobin, the muscle protein that gives meat its flavor, and elephant tissue.

So far, no one has tasted this meat for safety reasons.
“We haven’t encountered this protein in thousands of years, and we don’t know how our immune system will react to it,” said one of the scientists working on the project.
Among other things, he clarified that if the task was to make the meatball tasty, the scientists would make some changes to their project.
