Meteorologists are warning residents to prepare for "potentially record" temperatures of up to 115F (46C⁰) in the Central Valley and 120F (49 C⁰) in desert areas such as Palm Springs, with temperatures in Death Valley set to approach an all-time high. The heat is expected to intensify by the weekend (July 10-11).

“At this time of year, temperatures will be about 10 degrees above normal,” said Diana Crofts-Pelayo, a spokeswoman for the California Office of Emergency Services. “A record heat wave is coming.”

The state has already faced severe drought and fires caused by arid conditions. The fire situation could be exacerbated by gusty winds near the Oregon border and predicted thunderstorms in the Sierra Nevada mountains, forecasters said.

“It will be a long heat wave, even at night you shouldn’t expect much coolness. This is a very dangerous time,” said Eric Schoening, a specialist with the National Weather Service (NWS).

The warnings follow last week's record-breaking heatwave in the usually cool Pacific Northwest, which has resulted in hundreds died in Oregon, Washington and British Columbia (Canada) from conditions associated with fever.

According to Sierra Littlefield, an NWS meteorologist, the fact that California is expected to experience prolonged heat at night increases the risk of heatstroke.

Forecasters said residents of the state's largest population centers, such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, which are located along the coast, will benefit from the cold from the ocean and will not experience excessively high temperatures.

A spokesperson for the California emergency services office advised hinterland residents to pre-cool their homes if they have air conditioning and to lower the curtains to keep the air cool. She also asked state residents to save energy by turning off unnecessary appliances.

“What we don’t want is to have a shortage that requires a power outage,” she explained.
