Dozens of new cases: measles outbreak in the USA has become the worst for 27 years

Over the past week, 33 new cases of measles were reported in America, bringing the total number of cases to 1077. Federal health officials have already called the 2019 outbreak the worst in 27 years.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that the number of cases of very contagious and sometimes fatal diseases increased by 3% over the week. The 2019 outbreak of the year that spread to the US 28 states is the worst since the 1992 year, when 2126 cases of illness were reported, writes CNBC.

Health experts say the virus has spread to school-age children whose parents refused to vaccinate them against measles, mumps and rubella. These parents, some of whom belong to ultra-orthodox Jewish communities in New York, fear that the vaccine may cause autism, despite scientific studies that refute such statements.

The disease most often affects children who have not been vaccinated.

In 2000, measles was declared eliminated from the United States, meaning there was no ongoing transmission of the disease for a year. However, cases of the virus occur from time to time and are spread through travelers from other countries.

CDC officials have warned that the US is at risk of losing its status as the most victorious country, if the outbreak, which began in October 2018 in New York and has not yet ended, will be active until October 2019.

Measles has made a comeback in the U.S. because 82 people in 2018 and more than 40 in 2019 brought it into the United States from other countries, most commonly Ukraine, Israel and the Philippines, federal officials said.
