How the war of the USA and Russia in the Black Sea will end: an assessment of the American media

If the United States and Russia clash face to face in the Black Sea, then such an armed conflict could end fatally for the US Navy. Writes about this The National Interest.

Recent exercises near the maritime borders of Russia made us wonder what would happen if a naval war broke out between the United States and Russia. The conflict could hypothetically be due to the presence of about 18 000 mines remaining after the Second World War in the Black and Azov Seas, which lie at the bottom and are waiting in the wings.

If one of the mines goes off and accidentally sinks a NATO ship, this could very well lead to a real armed conflict. At the same time, NATO forces (with the exception of Turkey) in the Black Sea will represent “negligible actual military significance.” And most likely, “they will be destroyed in the first hours of the war.”

The publication notes that the United States was lucky that the current Montreux Convention prohibits aircraft carriers from passing through the Turkish Straits. Otherwise, they would have been quickly destroyed by a powerful combination of Russian diesel submarines, coastal mobile missile forces and small but deadly missile boats.

In addition, Russian aircraft are equipped with hypersonic anti-ship missiles, for example, the “Dagger” system, which would also give Russia an advantage.

According to experts, aircraft carriers that were previously used in the United States in conflicts have long been outdated for modern warfare. Now even Iran and North Korea have enough power to crush the carrier group, which means that countries such as China and Russia, especially since they have been working for more than half a century to eliminate possible problems with their weapons.

But hitting a pair of missiles or a torpedo will not be able to sink the aircraft carrier. Therefore, nevertheless, in such a conflict, Russia will also suffer losses.

But still you need to collect a huge armada in order to save a failed ship of such a level as an aircraft carrier. And such a rescue operation would be an excellent vulnerable target for the enemy. A hypothetical armed conflict in the Black Sea will lead to the loss of a significant part of the US Navy.
