Drug prices for cancer patients in the US have increased 15 times
A group of US senators initiated an investigation to determine why a long-used anticancer drug went up by 1400 percent from 2013. Reports about it The Hill.
The drug in question, lomustine, was introduced in 1976 year for the treatment of brain tumors and Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Lomustine, which currently has no competition, cost $ 50 per capsule with the highest dose in 2013. Now a capsule with the same dose costs $ 768.
Congressmen Susan Collins, Catherine Musto and Claire McCuskill dispatched to the CEO Tri-Source Pharma Robert DiKrishi a letter in which he was asked to explain the reason for the rise in prices and to report the amount of profit received by the company as a result of this.
After in 2013 year Tri-Source Pharma acquired from another company the right to issue lomustine, prices began to rise sharply.
Senators reminded the head of the pharmaceutical company the fate of Martin Shkreli. He 55 times raised the price of the drug pyrimethamine, intended for the treatment of toxoplasmosis in AIDS patients. After acquiring the right to release a drug, its cost went up from 13,5 to 750 dollars. 9 March court found Shkreli guilty of securities fraud and sent to jail for seven years.
The senators also asked the company to provide a list of all drugs sold by the company, which went up by at least 200 percent in one year.
