American Airlines flight attendant neutralizes a brawler with a coffee pot during a flight

American Airlines Flight 1775 from Los Angeles (LAX) to Washington, DC (DCA) was diverted to Kansas City (MCI) due to an uncontrolled passenger, reports CNN.

“The flight landed safely at MCI at 14:28 p.m. local time and law enforcement met the flight upon arrival,” the statement said. “We are grateful to our team members who remain steadfastly committed to the safety and care of our customers and who handled the circumstances with the utmost skill and professionalism.”

Kansas City Aviation Department spokesman Joe McBride said the "passenger interfered with the flight crew," adding that the incident would be under the jurisdiction of the FBI.

The FBI confirmed the incident, adding that the individual had been taken into custody.

The passenger, a 50-year-old male, was charged with one count of assault and intimidation of a flight attendant and thus interfering with the duties of a flight attendant, according to a US Department of Justice press release.

The press release says the man will remain in custody until a detention hearing is scheduled.

Flight attendants and passengers detained rowdy

According to an affidavit about the incident, a 190cm tall, 108kg man told flight attendants that "people tried to hurt him and these people followed him on the plane."

The man went on to tell flight attendants that "he heard people harming his family over the phone," the affidavit says. When asked what these people looked like, the passenger told the flight attendants that one of them was sitting next to him on the plane and the other had a knife.

The flight attendant took the man's phone and saw that he tried to call 911 but couldn't get through, the affidavit says.

A few minutes after he sat down, the man asked for a cup of water and then went to the cockpit of the plane and "told the flight attendants that they were not flying and that the flight attendants were lying to him." The flight attendant used a drink cart to create distance between her and a passenger, the affidavit says.

The man then grabbed some plastic cutlery, removed a napkin from it, and placed the cutlery in the sleeve of his shirt, according to a Justice Department press release. The flight attendant told investigators that she was threatened with a knife.

“The man then grabbed a small bottle of champagne by the neck of the bottle and tried to break the bottle on the counter. He started kicking and shoving the service cart in the direction of one of the flight attendants, ”the message says.

The man then tried to open the plane door. The flight attendant grabbed the coffee pot and hit the man twice on the head with it. Several passengers approached to help the flight attendants.

One of those passengers was a policeman who pulled the man away from the door. One passenger punched the man in the jaw, while another grabbed him by the neck and knocked him to the floor. The flight attendants told investigators that they did not serve the man alcohol during the flight.

Muaz Mustafa, a Washington, D.C. resident, was on board the plane and said when the plane landed, police and the FBI were on board. Passengers were transferred to another flight.

According to the FAA, 2021 has been a tough year as the number of unruly passengers has skyrocketed in the United States, with 31 reported unruly passengers as of December 5981st. Of these, 4290, almost 72%, were associated with a reluctance to use masks.
