More than 30 people in the United States have picked up a rare, untreatable disease

35 people in the United States were diagnosed with a rare fungal infection Candida auris (S. Auris), which has a high mortality rate and is resistant to most antifungal drugs.

Clinical warning about the risk of spreading the disease in the United States was published in June 2016, reports The Washington Post.

The fungal infection of C. Auris is resistant to several antifungal drugs, and it is difficult to determine in a patient. This infection was first reported in Japan in the 2009 year. After that, it was discovered in a number of countries around the world, including Colombia, India, Israel, Kenya, Kuwait, Pakistan, Venezuela, South Korea and the UK.

Candida auris causes serious blood infections, spreads easily from person to person in healthcare settings, lives for months on the skin and for weeks on bed rails, chairs and other hospital equipment.

Some strains of this infection are resistant to all three main classes of antifungal drugs. Based on studies of a limited number of patients, scientists concluded that the mortality rate in 60%, while many patients with Candida Auris had other serious diseases.

The most at risk of picking up this fungus are people who have been in intensive care for a long time, and are also connected to catheters for a long period.

The highest incidence of this infection was recorded in New York, with at least 28 cases. Additionally, patients with this infection have been reported in Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts and New Jersey.

In addition to 35, even 18 Americans were carriers of Candida Auris, but the fungus did not cause them any disease.
