More than 3 flights to the US canceled due to approaching powerful winter storm

Airlines have canceled thousands of flights for January 29 as a winter storm with strong winds and snow is set to envelop major cities on the east coast. CNN.

About 29 flights were canceled as of Jan. 3400, according to FlightAware, with the east coast hit the hardest.

300 flights have been canceled at Boston's Logan Airport, which is a hub for JetBlue and Delta Air Lines (DAL). JetBlue (JBLU) has cut its schedule by 50%. About 17% American and 18% United (UAL) were also cancelled.

Feeder airline Republic Airways, which operates under the names American Eagle, Delta Connection and United Express, has canceled 60% of its schedule for Jan. 29.

There have been more than 600 flight cancellations at New York airports, including John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia. Both of these airports are served by Delta, JetBlue and American (AAL). Newark Liberty in New Jersey, which is United's hub, had 267 flights cancelled.

Delta, JetBlue and United have allowed travelers departing from multiple East Coast airports to rebook without paying fare differences.

"Delta's team of meteorologists at the airline's operations and customer center will continue to monitor the weather and make tactical adjustments as necessary," the airline said.

An American Airlines spokesman said the hurricane is "anticipated to have a significant impact on the northeast, especially at Boston International Airport."

On January 28, more than 1000 cancellations were registered, most of them in Chicago, Illinois.

75 million people from the southeast to New England could face dangerous heavy snowfall and winds approaching hurricane force. Possible power outages, flooding in coastal areas, which will seriously impair travel.

"This storm is likely to intensify at a rate and intensity equivalent to only the most powerful hurricanes, so the potential for such a storm cannot be overestimated," CNN meteorologist Brandon Miller said.

The storm will cause extremely low temperatures with a dangerous cold snap from Saturday, January 29 to Sunday, January 30.

The Eastern Region National Weather Service said the storm will intensify rapidly over the next 24 hours.

This rapid rise is sometimes referred to as a "bomb cyclone".
