Charity in the US beats records: how and where do Americans donate money

According to a report by Giving USA, published on 12 in June, the level of charity reached a record high in 2017 — Americans for the first time donated over 400 billions of dollars to various charities.

Last year, Americans spent 410,02 billion dollars on philanthropic goals, which is 5,2% more than in 2016, writes USA Today.

In 2017, charitable income from all sources increased. The increase in three of the four traditional sources of charity exceeded 5%, in particular, contributions from corporations grew by 8%, from foundations by 6%, and from individuals by 5%.

Donations from individuals account for more than half of the money Americans spend on charity at $286,7 billion, followed by foundations ($66,9 billion), posthumous charitable gifts at $35,7 worldwide and contributions from corporations at $20,8 billion.

Among beneficiaries of charitable contributions, the largest increase was in money sent to the funds, their number in 2017 increased by 15,5% compared to 2016 in the year. This was based on several large donations provided to funds by individual philanthropists, such as Bill and Melinda Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, as well as Michael and Susan Dell.

8,7% increased the amount of contributions received by organizations engaged in art and culture.

However, if we talk about actual amounts, then most of all in 2017, religious organizations received. Americans donated $ 127,37 billion, which is 2,9% more than in 2016 year.

While the total amount of donations has increased, the number of Americans participating in charity is decreasing. From 2000 to 2014, the proportion of Americans who donated to charity fell from 66,2% to 55,5%.
