Apple will check private photos and messages on users' devices: why is it needed

Apple has announced a number of new security features. Now she will check all the photos on iCloud. Thus, the company plans to search for evidence of child abuse and child pornography. Writes about it MC.today.

What happened

The company believes that the new system can help law enforcement agencies in criminal investigations, but could open the door to increased legal and government requirements for user data.

The system, called neuralMatch, alerts the verification service if it thinks it has detected illegal images. The team will then contact law enforcement.

The neuralMatch neural network was trained using 200 images from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and will first be tested in the United States.

According to a source close to the company, the neural network will issue a so-called security voucher for each photo. This voucher is able to determine if the photo is suspicious or not.

By marking a certain number of photos as suspicious, Apple will allow all of these photos to be decrypted and, if they prove to be illegal, will pass the information on to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.

What Apple says

Apple said that before sending the photo to law enforcement agencies, the company's internal specialists will initially study it. If they confirm the authenticity of the image and there are several of them, they will transfer the data to the police.

If the user considers the complaint to be erroneous, he can dispute the complaint.

Intimate messages

In addition to checking photos, Apple announced the launch of a security feature in messages. If a minor user receives an intimate photo in iMessage, the system will blur it and warn the user about suspicious content.

As soon as the child decides to see this photo, the parents will receive a notification. Also, a minor will not be able to send an intimate photo and hide it from his parents. The system will warn them about this too.
