American intelligence: the origin of the coronavirus will forever remain a mystery

US intelligence officials said they will likely never be able to pinpoint the real cause of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. However, they are more inclined to believe that it was still not created in the laboratory as a biological weapon. Writes about it with the BBC.

The Bureau of the Director of National Intelligence (now Avril Haynes) has published a new analysis of the origins of the coronavirus.

In him, as in the previous, two main hypotheses of origin are considered - a leak from a laboratory (the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China is most often mentioned in this hypothesis) and a natural mutation during transmission to humans of a virus that was previously distributed among animals.

Both versions are considered equally plausible. No new data has emerged to dwell on one of them and discard the second, according to the report of the American intelligence community.

The report is declassified and published on the website of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

China disapproves of this undertaking by the American intelligence services.

The US intelligence service includes 17 departments. Four of them (none specifically named) gravitate towards the version of the natural origin of the virus, but admit that the degree of confidence in this version is low.

At the same time, one service believes that the first cases of human infection with COVID-19 can definitely be considered the result of a virus leak from a laboratory, perhaps during experiments or handling of infected animals at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. This conclusion evokes a slightly higher degree of confidence among intelligence agency analysts—they rate it as moderate.

The report said the Chinese authorities were unaware of the virus's existence until the outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan in late 2019. However, according to the report, Beijing continues to obstruct international investigations and refuses to share information.

According to the official Chinese version, the first outbreak of the new virus began in the poultry market in Wuhan in 2019. That is why the version of the natural origin of the virus was initially considered the only reasonable one, and attempts to link the virus with the activities of the Wuhan Institute were perceived by many scientists as conspiracy theories.

However, at the beginning of the year, the American media found circumstantial evidence that allows them to take more seriously the version of the virus leak from the laboratory.

In May, US President Joe Biden instructed the secret services to analyze all available information in favor of both versions, not excluding laboratory ones.

The Chinese embassy in Washington called the new report from the intelligence community a farce.

“The US attempt to rely not on scientists, but on the intelligence apparatus to identify the origins of COVID-19 is a complete political farce,” the embassy said. “We support efforts to find its sources on a scientific basis and will continue to actively participate in this process.” At the same time, we firmly reject attempts to politicize this issue.”
