An American who received a face transplant first appeared to the public.
Cameron Underwood 26 years, in 2016, he attempted suicide and shot himself in the face. Cameron survived, but lost most of his lower jaw, nose and all teeth, except one. After that, he underwent several traditional plastic surgeries, but they did not help much.
Cameron Underwood lives in California, but for a transplant he had to fly to New York to visit Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, a professor at the University of New York, Voice of America.
The operation lasted 25 hours. The first such operation was made in France in 2005, and since then, 40 has been performed in the world.
“Cameron is one of the youngest face transplant patients in the world,” says Dr. Rodriguez.
Cameron was very lucky - a donor was found for him just 6 months after he submitted his application. This is important because other patients who lived for many years with a disfigured face experienced difficulties with socialization and depression. Some became addicted to alcohol or drugs.
The donor was the deceased 23-year-old William Fisher, a writer and director from New York. William's mother and Cameron's family supported each other during the operation.
Cameron's life is gradually getting better.
“Everything is fine, I’m just doing everything as usual: hanging out with friends, working, doing something at home. I do everything I like, as always,” he says.
Cameron was discharged from hospital in February, but for a while he remained in New York for rehabilitation. Among other things, he learned to speak again.
“I can talk to my family and not keep everything to myself. This helps me a lot,” the guy admits.
He will have to take immunosuppressants every 12 hours for the rest of his life, but Cameron is confident that this is a minor inconvenience, because he now has a chance at a normal life.
