Americans spend on kindergarten as much as renting
More than a third of Americans who rent housing have children.
And their costs for housing and care for babies are almost the same, writes Time.
The average cost of child care in the United States is $1 per month, according to HotPads analysis. This is only slightly less than the average rent in the States - $385 per month.
Currently, rent is rising faster than child care. The average rent in the US rose 2,3% last year, while the average cost of child care increased 1,3%. Larger families need larger homes, so average rents for two- and three-bedroom apartments are rising even faster, rising 3%, while rents for one-bedroom apartments rose 2%.
“Rent increases have slowed, but as the economy recovers, child care costs will likely continue to rise. For renters with young children, this means that any potential savings they might make from slowing rent increases could be quickly eroded by rising child care costs,” said economist Joshua Klahr.
