Alexey Serebryakov about emigration and the difference between Russians and Americans

Russian actor Alexei Serebryakov, who emigrated to Canada, believes that the Russian national idea is "strength, arrogance and rudeness." He stated this in an hour-long interview with video blogger Yuri Dudi, published on Youtube-channel VDud.

“Until now, neither knowledge, nor intelligence, nor enterprise, nor dignity are the prerogative of the national idea. The national idea is strength, arrogance and rudeness. I came across this today. He gave a bribe to a traffic cop. I broke it a little. I didn’t want to waste time, but he really wanted this bribe, and I thought, maybe he has three children, who knows,” said the actor.

During the interview, he also told how Americans are different from Russians:

“The American takes it and does it because the psychology there is different. Psychology of success, psychology of career, psychology of the fact that I have rights, I have freedoms, I am free in my will, I am free in what I do, I am responsible for my life. This is the psychology of an American,” Serebryakov said, emphasizing that he is not a Russophobe.

The actor also tried to answer the question of why a beautiful front part of the city was rebuilt in St. Petersburg in 1703, and in the courtyards it was “scary, monstrous, suicidal”, and why it’s still possible to meet in Russia the rickety fences.

“It’s not poverty to nail the plank straight. This is absolute laziness, monstrous, deep laziness not to take care of your life. Give power to someone, let them decide how we will live. Just so that we don’t do this ourselves,” Serebryakov said.

The interview also recalled why the actor made the decision to move to another country in September 2011, when Dmitry Medvedev refused to participate in the presidential election, and Vladimir Putin announced his intention to take part in the race.

“I understood what would happen. I realized that I needed to leave. Since my wife is a Canadian citizen, we decided to move to Canada so that our children could also obtain citizenship. … If you want to build the longest bridge, you don’t have to wait for the river to flow in your village. We need to go to where this river is and build a bridge there. But to do this you must speak a language that is spoken all over the world. You must be educated. In this regard, I needed to give the children the greatest possible number of competitive advantages,” the actor recalled.

The second reason for emigration is “the general state of the atmosphere”.

“It’s enough to watch television, where people don’t listen to each other, they scream and are at each other’s throats. The desire to crush and tear into pieces on a television screen is so great because it basically hangs in the air. It was from this atmosphere that I took my children away,” says the actor.

According to Serebryakov, he himself is able to survive in such conditions, but does not want his children to spend time on it.

“You don’t have to defend your manhood by punching someone in the face. Male dignity is already visible. Everything that surrounds us, with which we interact - love, parents, wife, children, friendship, hobby, passion, work - all this is a system of responsibilities. You are responsible for everything. It happened, there is nothing you can do about it. Either you can be responsible or you can't. And the fact that you are carrying it is immediately obvious. This is manhood,” he said.

The actor emphasized that he found nothing more important in his life than his family.

“I have not found anything more important in my life than children and than my wife Masha. Everything else doesn't seem so important to me. I don’t know greater happiness than my wife and my children. In any case, I won’t experience such happiness on the Cannes track,” Serebryakov concluded.

Several years ago, Alexey and his wife Maria took two-year-old Daniel from the orphanage, and when they learned that the child had a brother Stepan, they adopted him.

Masha and I failed twice to have a baby. And I love her so much that I didn’t want to arrange these provocations anymore. We realized that we can do this (to adopt children. - Ed.), Stepan and Danya - our own children.

When asked about his attitude to "the law of Dima Yakovlev," Serebryakov called it "the law of bastards."

“I, for one, am very sorry that from the moment we moved to Canada, thanks to the“ law of bastards ”adopted by the State Duma, we can no longer adopt anyone. ... Because my wife is a Canadian citizen, ”said the actor.

The actor voiced his opinion about Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that Putin has several drawbacks: “endless lies” and “theft”.

Serebryakov believes that his vision of the world does not coincide with the opinion of Putin and his words would not change the behavior of the Russian president.

“I can’t imagine what one can say to him (Putin – ed.). Because our vision of the world is so different, and no matter what I tell him, it will not change anything in him and will not lead to anything,” says Serebryakov.

Recall Serebryakov played a major role in Andrei Zvyagintsev's film Leviathan. The film received the Golden Globe Award in the nomination "Best film in a foreign language." In 2012, the actor and his family moved to Canada. His wife has Canadian citizenship, two adoptive sons are studying in a Canadian school.
