ICE agents arrest 212 illegal immigrants during raids in Los Angeles
Employees of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) arrested 212 people during raids in Los Angeles, California for violating federal immigration laws and handed inspection reports to 122 businesses in the city.
This was the result of a five-day special operation, says department site.
88% of those arrested were previously convicted criminals.
The ICE said that the status of the city of “refuge” does not allow immigration officers to detain illegal immigrants in prisons in Los Angeles, so they will carry out more street raids, which exposes agents to additional danger and requires additional costs.
Of the 212 people arrested, 195 people were either convicted criminals or violated a court decision to deport them, never having returned to their homeland or returned to the US again after deportation. More than 55% of those arrested were sentenced for serious or violent crimes, such as sexual crimes against children, armed attacks, or were convicted of committing several other significant crimes.
Some individuals arrested during this operation will face federal prosecution for illegal entry and illegal return after deportation. Those arrested who are not subject to federal prosecution will be deported from the United States. Those persons in respect of whom deportation decisions have already been issued, or those who illegally returned to the United States after expulsion, are subject to immediate expulsion from the country. In the 2017 fiscal year, ICE conducted 1360 business inspections for immigration law compliance and made 139 criminal and 172 administrative arrests. The courts ordered these businesses to pay 97,6 million dollars in criminal fines and $ 7,8 civil penalties.
