Belarus is trying to improve relations with the EU

Belarus is counting on the beginning of a “good dialogue” with the European Union, said the country’s President Alexander Lukashenko, receiving Helga Maria Schmid, Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service, in Minsk.

“I hope this is the beginning of our good dialogue with the European Union, although we have been talking a lot about relations between the EU and Belarus lately. I think this is a necessary thing, this is a movement in the right direction. At least, relations between Belarus and the European Union today are not as vague as before,” stressed Alexander Lukashenko.

The President of Belarus also expressed confidence in the significant role of his country in trying to resolve the situation in the region related to the military conflict in the east of Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the leaders of the Belarusian opposition call on the EU not to force relations with official Minsk before the upcoming presidential elections in November, recalling that before, on the eve of election campaigns, the authorities “flirted with Europe” in the hope of legitimizing the election results.
