Costco 5 products that are not worth buying
If you have a Costco membership or are familiar with those who have, most likely you are aware of the quality and value of many products in this network.
At Costco you can find great deals on a large number of well-known brands such as Tide, Kellogg's and Kraft, reminds Time. But if you're looking for even better deals on groceries and household items, you can check out the items offered by Costco's own Kirkland Signature brand. Consumers often give these products excellent ratings for their high quality and lower prices than popular brands.
ACSI's 2017 report, which charts customer satisfaction levels at leading U.S. retailers, ranked Costco No. XNUMX among all department and discount stores.
And yet no one is perfect, and even Costco has several problem items. Here are products of the Kirkland Signature brand that can be overlooked:
1. Tuna Kirkland Signature Solid White Albacore tuna
If your concern for animals extends to the inhabitants of the ocean depths, go past the canned tuna from Costco.
In 2017, environmental organization Greenpeace ranked the product as one of the nine worst brands of canned tuna in its shopping guide's section on choosing "ethical and fair" brands. In its ranking, Greenpeace criticized Costco's tuna in part because the company "does not combat destructive fishing practices."
By the way, at Costco you can buy Wild Planet tuna, which Greenpeace says is an excellent choice by most criteria.
2. Kirkland Signature Washing Powder
Kirkland Signature offers several varieties of environmentally friendly laundry detergents such as Kirkland Signature Environmentally Responsible Liquid Laundry Detergent and Kirkland Signature Free & Clear Liquid Laundry Detergent, hypoallergenic.
Despite the detergent's names, the Environmental Working Group has given Kirkland's "environmentally responsible" liquid laundry detergent a grade F for environmental friendliness, saying the product is associated with an increased risk of asthma, skin irritation, cancer and environmental harm.
Several Consumer Reports customers have also reported rashes after using Kirkland Free & Clear Liquid Detergent.
3. Diapers Kirkland Signature Supreme Diapers
If you have small children, buying diapers in bulk may seem like the right decision. But Kirkland's Signature Supreme Diapers may not be the best savings option.
192 - this is how many diapers the smallest package of the Kirkland brand contains in size 1 (for babies). As Cheapism points out, your baby may outgrow those 192 diapers before you've had a chance to use them.
4. Kirkland Signature Light Beer
Kirkland vodka gets high marks even in comparison with competitors of well-known brands, and Kirkland wines have long won the loyalty of consumers. So you might think that Kirkland beer is just as good.
However, with Kirkland Signature Light Beer, you'd be wrong—at least that's what the response from beer lovers says. Customers of review site RateBeer complained about the taste of the light beer, with one reviewer saying it smelled like urine. Users gave the beer a 1,97 out of 5 rating, while BeerAdvocate reviewers gave it a 2,5 out of 5.
However, Kirkland lager has its fans, especially because it costs less than 0,5 dollars per can. The client and super fan of this beer, Randy Kolpek, in 2017, even created a YouTube video that quickly became viral. Video man dedicated to his favorite drink.
(Just the other day it became known that the company has stopped selling this beer - editor's note)
5. Everything you can't use until it breaks
The Kirkland brand has a lot of great products, but most of them come in large containers for large bulk purchases. If you cannot use an item or product before it deteriorates, this can be a waste of money, regardless of the quality of the product.
In addition to perishable items such as milk or cheese, be careful when purchasing foods with a longer shelf life - oils, grains, spices. For example, Southern Living recommends using olive oil within 18 to 24 months to prevent it from going rancid.
Cereals, such as rice and quinoa, may also become unusable over time. It is recommended to store whole-grain products for six months in a cool dry pantry or up to a year in the freezer.
