In November 2017, the Gibsons filed a lawsuit against the college. They accused the faculty of encouraging protests and also pointed out that the boycott had brought their businesses to decline. The three students later pleaded guilty to misconduct, and also stated that there was no racial bias in the Gibsons' actions.

In court, Gibson’s lawyers said that the college, which has a fund of $ 887 million, can easily pay this amount to the family. College spokesman Scott Vargo declined to comment on the decision.
