Skyeng's 3 features for self-study English
To learn a foreign language, experts advise studying more than twice a week. But not everyone can afford more frequent lessons with a tutor, and here the additional - and at the same time free - opportunities that the school provides its students come to the rescue Skyeng.
I remind that ForumDaily and online English school Skyeng conduct joint experiment, during which I will go through a series of classes at this school and find out whether online training can help me write articles that can not be distinguished from the texts of a native speaker. Every week I will share with you my impressions and life-related language learning hacks. Follow my progress and learn English!
This week I had a third lesson, and besides, I attended a webinar on pronunciation, mastered the application Sword interesting video platform features Skyeng.
Impressions from the third week of training
As you may already know from my previous articles, for each lesson I write text for my English-language blog, in order to take it apart with Elena, my teacher.
Each time it became easier for me to write, and the volume of the text gradually increased. This time I wrote a post on a whole page, and I spent a little more time on this than usually takes to create an article of a similar size in Russian.
I also noticed that thanks to the writing of such essays, the words from the passive reserve began to turn into active, and I began to use them more often in colloquial speech.
In the large text about horoscopes that I prepared this time, I had to use many synonyms so as not to repeat the same words, and I began to use all the words with the same meaning that I found in the dictionary. However, when analyzing the text, Elena explained to me that not all words with the meaning “forecast” are appropriate in this context - one implies exclusively the weather, and the other means the fortune-teller’s spell.
It took almost the entire lesson to discuss this text, but this is not scary, because the lesson scheduled for this day on the video platform Skyeng I can go on my own, as a homework. And this is just one of many opportunities for self-study. I'll tell you more about the three possibilities provided by Skyeng, which I tested personally.
So, 3 features from Skyeng for self-study English.
1. Aword application
It allows you to train knowledge of the words that the student adds to his vocabulary by clicking on them while working on the video platform. You can also replenish the vocabulary of the application by installing a special extension from Skyeng into your browser - with it you can read texts on any English-language sites and instantly look up the meanings of unfamiliar words, as well as add them to the dictionary.
Training is like a fun game, only useful, and thanks to the repetition of words at certain intervals adjusted by science, they are remembered for a long time.
2. Free webinars
Skyeng hosts webinars on a wide variety of topics twice a week, and I sign up for almost everything. Even if I don’t manage to be at the computer at the right time, it’s not a big deal - the next day the webinar host sends a link to his recording, which I can watch at any time. The last webinar I attended was dedicated to a topic that is sore for me - pronunciation. The presenter of the webinar told how to understand from the reaction of an English-speaking interlocutor that you have a strong accent or poor pronunciation, and also explained in detail how to correctly pronounce English sounds that are not in Russian speech.
3. Video lessons
Studying the possibilities of the interactive platform Skyeng, I came across special lessons on films, chose one of them and began to study. The two-hour film was broken into 20-minute chunks. You had to first watch the video and then listen to the audio track from it, trying to understand every word. It was not easy because in the film I chose, half the characters were elderly and mumbling, and the other half spoke Hindi. Then I used a lifesaver - a link to the text of this passage. I listened to the audio recording and read the text at the same time to remember how the spelling of words relates to pronunciation. This took a lot of time, but it helped to understand the unintelligible speech of the characters and correctly answer the questions under the video.
I will keep you updated on how my studies are progressing!
