Rio 2016: judo player brought Russia the third gold in a fight with an American
Judo player Hasan Khalmurzayev brought the Russian national team the third gold medal at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. This is the second Russian gold in judo competition after the victory of Beslan Mudranov on the first day of the Games-2016.
22-year-old Khalmurzayev, a native of the Republic of Ingushetia, became the winner in the weight category up to 81 kg, defeating Travis Stevens in the final bout.
Reportedly, the Russian defended himself for a long time throughout the fight, but the fate of the gold medal was decided by one move - Khalmurzaev grabbed his opponent behind his back, making an ippon throw (the highest score).
Before the victory at the Olympics, the main achievements of Halmurzayev were the titles of European champion 2016 of the year and champion of the Universiade of 2015 of the year.
Bronze awards went to the Japanese Takanore Nagase and the representative of the United Arab Emirates, the ex-Moldovan Sergey Tom.
Another gold was brought to the Russians the day before by the fencer Yana Yegoryan, who won the individual tournament sablistok.
In addition, on Tuesday, the Russian national team in artistic gymnastics won silver medals in the team championship, losing to the US team. The Americans, led by Simone Biles, were ahead of the Russians with their captain Alia Mustafina on 8 points. The third were Chinese women.
The men's Russian national gymnastics team on Monday also became the second, losing to Japan. However, if the Russian girls won the silver in London 4 a year ago, the gymnasts did not receive medals in the team championship from the year 2000.
The Russian team has already won 12 medals in total at the Rio Games, and this is currently the third highest figure - after the US (22 medals) and China (16 medals). The Russians are also behind the Australians in terms of gold medals - three top awards against four.
