1200 Jewish leaders from the United States and Canada gathered at the General Assembly of Jewish Federations to work together to find solutions to important problems for American Jews

After a three-year hiatus caused by the pandemic, more than 1200 leaders of Jewish communities in North America gathered in Chicago, Illinois on October 30 for a three-day General Assembly Jewish federations. The conference will set a unified agenda for the Jewish community for the coming year, as well as debate on the life-changing issues facing the North American Jewish community.

The General Assembly, first held 90 years ago, is the most significant leadership forum for the Jewish community in North America, bringing Jewish leaders from all walks of life together and providing a forum for productive dialogue and debate.

“We live in difficult times, when the number of anti-Semitic incidents is growing at an alarming rate, anti-Israel rhetoric is becoming increasingly aggressive, and millions of people are forced to leave their homes and flee war,” said the chairman of the board. Jewish Federation of North America Julie Platt. “The extreme challenges we face today require bold decisions and multifaceted cooperation from the Jewish community. This is the only way we can effectively strengthen our communities and ensure their safety. The General Assembly is a unique opportunity for our community leaders to come together to find solutions to these complex problems and discuss practical steps to build thriving Jewish communities. At the end of the forum, we will return to our communities with new strength and ideas.”

This year, the General Assembly will focus on responding to geopolitical challenges and global events affecting the Jewish community, as well as opportunities to create thriving Jewish communities. Issues to be discussed include ensuring security for Jewish communities, the reaction of Jewish federations to the war in Ukraine, the uncertainty that awaits the Jews of Ukraine and Russia, and new initiatives and partnerships to combat the rise of anti-Semitism.

The audience will be addressed by politicians, activists, representatives of government agencies and community leaders. Among them:

• Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog;
• US Ambassador to Germany Amy Gutmann;
• Israeli Ambassador to the United States Michael Herzog;
• journalist and news anchor Andrea Mitchell;
• Deborah Lipstadt, State Department Special Envoy for Monitoring and Combating Anti-Semitism;
• philosopher, writer and director Bernard Henry Levy and many others.
