10 packages for 3 of the day: Biden and De Niro also received homemade bombs in the mail

Investigators intercepted three more packages believed to contain explosives - two addressed to former US Vice President Joe Biden at his address in Delaware, and another to actor Robert De Niro in New York.

The parcels were discovered on the morning of October 25, after these incidents, the total number of explosive devices sent to well-known Americans in the last 72 hours reached ten, writes NBC.

Familiar with the investigation, officials say that as of Thursday, the police have no suspect. Investigators fear that the attacker could send more devices, and some of them have not yet been detected.

According to investigators, the devices are made very poorly, but it is not yet clear whether these attempts were simply to frighten the recipients and throw dust in the eyes or the attacker inadvertently made unreliable explosive devices.

The package for De Niro was addressed personally to the actor and sent to the building on Greenwich Street, which he owns. The police was called by the builder who worked at the site; it was he who saw the package. The item was seized by the police; no evacuation was carried out, since at that time there was practically no one in the building.

Less than two hours later, the FBI and local police found a packet with an explosive device at a post office in Delaware. This package was addressed to Biden. About an hour later, the second package, addressed to the former vice president, was confiscated at the post office in Wilmington, Delaware.

The package sent by De Niro and, at least, the first packet addressed to Biden, had the same stamps and return address (address of the congressman from Florida and the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee Debbie Wasserman Schulz).

The investigation checks whether some parcels were actually shipped from Florida.

As of Thursday, 10 such packages have been withdrawn. In addition to Biden and De Niro, two devices in separate packages were sent to Congresswoman Maxine Waters in California; similar packages were also addressed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former President Barack Obama, former Attorney General Eric Holder, former CIA director John Brennan (the package was sent to CNN news agency in New York) and billionaire George Soros.

None of the devices exploded, and no one was hurt. Authorities are studying explosives and warned that there may be more, encouraging people to be careful with the mail.

According to sources, the explosive devices were made of PVC tubes and contained a timer (digital alarm clock) connected to a detonator. X-rays show that PVC pipes are likely to contain debris, which can increase injuries in an explosion.

Several technicians stated that the devices contain all the components necessary for a successful explosion, although other experts claim that they may not all explode.

And this may have been part of the intruder’s plan.

“There is a theory that the bombs were not intended to explode, but were intended to intimidate,” said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

According to the police, explosive devices have several common features, which allows the investigation to assume that all the packages are interconnected.
