10 models of cars that are stolen most often

If you own a Dodge vehicle with a powerful engine, be especially careful to keep your car doors firmly closed tonight.

According to a recent study conducted by the nonprofit Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), two large Dodge vehicles with powerful engines—the Dodge Charger Hemi and the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat—are more likely to be stolen in the United States than any other vehicle. Money Talks News.

The number of vehicle theft insurance cases associated with these models is more than 5 times the average for all 2016 – 2018 models. This also applies to the luxury Infiniti Q50 sedan.

According to HLDI, a large and luxurious car is not always the best choice if you do not want to be stolen.

Here are the top 10 most frequently stolen cars and their categories:

1. Dodge Charger Hemi (large four-door car)
2. Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat (large two-door car)
3. Infiniti Q50, four-door (mid-size luxury car)
4. Infiniti QX80 (large luxury crossover)
5. GMC Sierra 1500, with cab (large four-door pickup truck)
6. Dodge Challenger (large two-door car)
7. Nissan Maxima (mid-size four-door car)
8. Chevrolet Silverado 1500, with cab (large four-door pickup)
9. Chrysler 300 all-wheel drive (large four-door car)
10. Mercedes-Benz S-Class, four-door, with a long wheelbase and all-wheel drive (a very large luxury car)

Not only were two Dodge Challenger models on the HLDI list, but Challenger was also included in the recent iSeeCars.com ranking, being among the 14's most deadly driving or driving cars.

“The models most likely to be stolen tend to be powerful, expensive or have a pickup truck body style, but vehicle theft is also a preventable crime. Better vehicle protection will be the best way to address the problem,” said Matt Moore, senior vice president of HLDI.

In compiling its list, HLDI examined how many applications for insurance claims due to theft were filed for the year on insured vehicles. Researchers also focused on hijacking the entire vehicle, separating such thefts from claims for stolen parts of the vehicle or items taken from the vehicle.
