10 US cities where cars are most often stolen

According to the National Crime Bureau's latest annual hot spots report, cities in the West, especially California, lead the way in American cities for car thefts. Money Talks News.

In compiling the report, a non-profit organization analyzed data on vehicle thefts received from the FBI National Crime Information Center. As a result, US cities with the highest rates of vehicle theft per capita in 2018 were identified.

The list is not the first to lead the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, despite the fact that in comparison with 2016 the year of the hijackings there was less by 28%.

The National Bureau of Crime Prevention explains the improvement in the fact that the Office for the Prevention of Car Theft was created in the state of New Mexico. But this success was not enough for Albuquerque not to take first place in the list of hot spots.

3. Bakersfield, CA
4. Pueblo, Colorado
5. Modesto, California
6. Redding, California
7. Stockton-Lodi, CA
8. Wichita, Kansas
9. Vallejo-Fairfield, CA
10. St. Joseph, Missouri

The organization explains that the ranking results were based on a population survey, so "an area with a much smaller population and a moderate number of thefts often has a higher rate of auto theft than an area where the higher number of thefts is statistically absorbed by a larger number of residents."

That's why St. Joseph ranks 10th with 674 auto thefts and Los Angeles ranks 38th with more than 53 thefts.

In general, the statistics of car thefts in the US in 2018 decreased by 3,3%, according to preliminary data from the FBI. The National Bureau of Crime Prevention notes that the number of thefts has decreased since 2004. Between 1991 and 2017 a year, the number of stolen cars decreased by 53%.

The improvement is explained by the fact that "vehicle manufacturers, law enforcement agencies and legislators have responded to crimes related to vehicle theft for many years."
